Don't become a statistic

High cholesterol affects more than 100 million Americans and is a serious health threat. One of the leading ways to treat it is with a class of prescription medicines called statins.

Despite the proven benefits of taking this medicine, at least 50% of people stop taking their statin within 1 year of starting it.

An empowered you!

If you (or someone you love) have high cholesterol and have been prescribed a statin, take some time to check out all this website has to offer. You'll discover key tools and information to empower you with confidence to SPEAK UP and have a frank conversation with your doctor before stopping this life-saving medication.

Let's get the cholesterol conversation started:

The ACTION survey of more than 5,000 people uncovered issues we should all be talking about

Here are key findings from the ACTION survey:

of current statin users openly communicate with their healthcare provider about the challenges they face with their statin treatment

of people say that their healthcare provider did not tell them that there are different types of statins available

of people taking statins aren’t concerned about their statin interacting with other medications or supplements they are taking. However, the risk of drug-to-drug interaction is real, and people currently treated with statins are taking an average of 7.7 other medications and/or supplements

of people (nearly 3 in 5) say it’s extremely important to them that their doctor takes an individualized approach to selecting the right statin for them

The survey of more than 5,000 U.S. adults aged 45 or older with high cholesterol, who have ever used a statin, revealed a clear need for a more open patient-doctor dialogue when it comes to statins. They also found that when it comes to choosing the right statin, patients want their doctor to take an individualized approach.

Speaking Up

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Foundation and Kowa Pharmaceuticals America, Inc., have partnered with Regis Philbin to get the conversation started through the Take Cholesterol to Heart campaign. Over 4 in 5 people were first diagnosed by their family physician. Seventy percent currently work with their family physician to manage their cholesterol.
